A stipulation of EU legislation, applicable in Northern Ireland, includes the requirement to position sampling sites for the assessment of a number of air pollutants. A recent EU Directive (Commission Directive (EU) 2015/1480 laying down the rules concerning reference methods, data validation and location of sampling points for the assessment of ambient air quality) has tightened and made clearer the criteria for where sampling points may be sited. This now means that the technical Schedule 1 of the Air Quality Standards Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 needed to be amended in line with these new requirements. The Air Quality Standards (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2017 carries out this role.
